Premier’s Statement on Ramadan

April 13, 2021

Victoria –Premier John Horgan has issued the following statement in honour of the month of Ramadan:

“Tonight at sunset, Muslims in British Columbia and around the world will mark the beginning of Ramadan – a holy month of fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection.

“Traditionally, Ramadan is a time for family and friends to gather, share stories and break bread at iftar after sunset. It’s a time when Muslims are especially mindful of giving back to their communities through zakat and volunteerism.

“Ramadan will again look different with mosques holding prayers online and families having iftars virtually. I want to commend the Muslim community for its efforts in keeping people safe while continuing to serve through curbside food hampers and online mental health support.

“There are better days ahead. However, the threat of new COVID-19 variants means we cannot relax our layers of protection as we near the finish line of this pandemic. During a crisis, the Islamic values of self discipline, generosity and sacrifice resonate more than ever and will go a long way to help us get through this difficult final push.

“On behalf of the Government of British Columbia, I wish everyone observing this holy month a safe and peaceful time of reflection. Ramadan Mubarak.”
