High levels of lead have been found in drinking water at four schools in Prince Rupert.
Conrad Elementary, Pineridge Elementary, Ecole Roosevelt Park Community School, and Prince Rupert Middle School are now working with Northern Health to address the problem.
In the meantime each school is installing new filtered water fountains for students and staff to use.
North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice has expressed concern with the findings.
“It is extremely troubling that we don’t know what level of lead children have been exposed to and for how long”, she says. “These are questions I will be taking to our Provincial Government”
Rice also wants to see older schools in other northwest communities, on the central coast, and on Haida Gwaii tested for lead exposure.
