Indigenous Veterans Day

Posted in:

Indigenous people have a long and proud history of military service to our country, tracing back to the War of 1812 when Metis and First Nations fought along the British against invading Americans.

During World War I, it is said that the response from Indigenous peoples to take up arms for Canada was so impressive that in some Indigenous communities, every single able-bodied man between 20 and 35 years of age voluntarily enlisted.

On this 25th annual Indigenous Veterans Day, I thank the veterans and their families for their sacrifices. We will remember.
