Connectivity helps keep people safe on Haida Gwaii

Today I joined community leaders, Minister of Citizens Services Jinny Sims and representatives from Telus to celebrate connectivity in Port Clements. In March of this year Telus completed construction of this cell tower, bringing high-speed wireless voice and Internet services to the community and some surrounding areas for the very first time.

Increased connectivity in Port Clements means community members will not only have access to highspeed internet, but also receive AlertReady notifications in the event of a natural disaster or other emergencies via their mobile device.

Internet connectivity plays an important role in keeping people safe in emergency situations, especially in remote areas. Chris Ashurst, president of the Masset Marine Rescue Society and Archipelago Ground Search and Rescue Society, knows this well. “Upgrades to our local internet network and cellular service are making a big difference in the work we do from an emergency-management perspective,” Ashurst said.
